HEARTLAND
THERAPEUTIC
RIDING
Equine Assisted Therapy
Heartland
Therapeutic Riding, Inc.'s mission is to provide therapy through
the use of the horse; to offer people with disabilities an opportunity
to increase their potential for fulfillment.
|

|
 |
|
 |
 |
WHAT
we do. Heartland Therapeutic Riding provides equine assisted therapy through
the movement and human interaction with the Horse. Intervention Therapy
is provided for children and adults as indicated by Occupational or Physical
Therapist. Sports Riding is also available for people with disabilities.
Heartland's Sports Riding utilizes motor, cognitive, and affective integration
in the design and implementation of each class session. |
 |
|
 |
| WHY
we
do it. Horseback riding is a helpful therapeutic tool in improving balance
and strengthening muscles. The action of the horse's back simulates the
action of walking in the rider's pelvis. Horseback riding uses all the muscles
in the body. Activities emphasizing cognitive, behavioral, psychological.
and physical goals of each participant, provides the rider with skills leading
to successful adaptive riding. |
 |
 |
|
 |
 |
WHO
we serve. Heartland Therapeutic Riding accepts participants
who exhibit physical or cognitive disabilities. Each individual is evaluated
prior to being accepted into Heartland's programs. People with the following
disabilities are sometimes included: orthopedic, neuromuscular, deafness,
blindness, and emotional disturbances as well as Down's Syndrome, Autism,
and mental retardation. Heartland's does not discriminate as to sex, creed,
color or ability to pay. Students are accepted with their doctor's written
permission. Students in need are provided financial aid. |
 |
|
 |
| HOW
we function. Heartland Therapeutic Riding employs
an Occupational Therapist as the licensed health professional who conducts
the Intervention Therapy Program. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructors
conduct the Sports Riding Program. Volunteers are an invaluable asset to
the program. Volunteers assist in all sessions as "side-walkers", assuring
the safety of the rider. Volunteers also assist in grooming, tacking, and
schooling horses. |
